by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer
Taft Property Ventures and Development Corp. (TPVDC) recently announced the upcoming launch of its fourth residential project after Palmas Verdes, Palm Heights and Nichols Park. TPVDC chief operations officer Marivic Secretaria said the Spanish-themed subdivision is situated along Salinas Drive in Lahug and caters to the middle-range market.
“Early next year, the subdivision will be formally opened. We will start to build the gate entrance and the perimeter fence this month. A Spanish house is usually characterized by a verandah and tiled roof,” she said. The project occupies almost four hectares. It features a park, tennis court, chapel and playground. A 24-hour security is also assured other than the electricity and centralized water system.
“The location is very strategic, just near schools, malls, church and commercial centers. With this, residents can easily enjoy siesta time and just like other residential developments of Taft Property, this Spanish-themed subdivision is designed by world-famous architects. This future project offers you a luxurious yet affordable living,” Secretaria stressed.

Canon introduces stylish digi-cams, PictBridge compatible printers

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

Canon Marketing (Philippines) Inc. recently introduced its newest design in the Ixus line of compact digital cameras, seven PictBridge printers and five bubble jet printers. The launch cum fashion show was held at the Cebu City Marriott Hotel.

Canon’s VP for marketing in dealer-channel Vincy Sanchez said the company is proud to be one of the first among the Southeast Asian countries to carry a revolutionary technology “Picture bridge” (PictBridge) that allows its photo printers to print directly from digital cameras and videos from Canon and other brands.

“With regards to our new line of digital cameras, they are trendy and stylish, super slim, extremely compact and designed to be carried in a shirt or jacket pocket,” he said. “The new cameras we have are lifestyle products. They’re like cellphones which you can carry on a daily basis. This is a new trend in the market now,” he added.

Any Pictbridge or digital video camera can be compatible for printers, clarified Angelo Martinez, Canon’s sales and marketing manager for consumer and imaging product division. “We’re targeting the digi-cam users to have their own printers. We have high penetration for home printers market though. We’re taking it a step further,” Martinez revealed. Sanchez disclosed, however, that Canon always aspires to bring its products closer to its market.

“With MDR Microwaresales as our partnering distributor, I believe we are now closer to our potential clients in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. We’re the only one to strategize to change our distribution.” Fashion statement in photography Canon’s newest digital cameras boast of a new standard for style and design. A leader in digital and film photography nationwide and worldwide, Canon said the new camera models have maximum recording pixels for still images, while the sharp and full-color images are displayed on a 1.5-inch low-temperature monitor displaying shooting and playback menus.

Designed to be the perfect digital companion and fashion statement for anyone, the new models are equipped with high resolution, fixed focal-length lens, powerful digital zoom, quick shot function, three-minute movie mode, and direct print mode that is compliant with the new PictBridge industry standard. High-quality prints Canon said that its seven new PictBridge printers and five new bubble jet printers (i455, i475D, i560, i865 and i905D) offer high-quality prints of up to 4,800dpi resolution, delivering ultra-fine prints to achieve ultimate photo print quality. They can connect directly with digi-cams of any brand for the printing of digital images.

Newest call center to hire more e-reps

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

A newly opened call center has announced it will hire 1,000 more people by the time the facilities of its Cebu outlet are complete.

People Support Philippines (PSP) president Bong Borja said the call center industry is growing. “Currently, we operate two centers in Manila, and we just opened this center in Cebu. We project a 70-100% growth in 2004. Sooner, we will be servicing one of the biggest Internet service providers.”

Formally launched yesterday in Salinas Drive, Lahug, PSP has two phases: one can accommodate 200 people, the other 600. “We’ve already hired e-representatives who are undergoing training and exposure, and we’ll still get more after we completely furnish our facilities here. We are glad to contribute to the economy and employ a lot of talents,” he said.

He also explained that the take-up rate in Cebu is higher than that of Manila as there are only a few contact centers here. “We brought People Support here because of the availability of knowledge workers and a good number of communicators,” Borja said, also disclosing that each e-rep enjoys a five-figure pay both for starters and regulars. PSP e-reps provide voice, email and chat support to clients who are based in the United States. “Making connectivity from the U.S. to the Philippines is very seamless,” he said.

CDH’s Cardiovascular Center celebrates sixth anniversary

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

CEBU Doctors’ Hospital’s (CDH) Cebu Cardiovascular Center (CCC) celebrated its sixth anniversary last Nov. 17.

The center’s surgeons, anesthesiologists and cardiologists revealed they have successfully done close to 250 open and close heart surgeries on patients coming from the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

“In an instant, we can do surgery for we are a complete team. No need of getting doctors from the outside,” CCC’s cardiovascular medicine chairman Dr. Manuel T. Lim said in a press conference.

Comparable with good hospitals worldwide The center’s team of cardiologists and surgeons said their field is somewhat risky. “Every patient is challenging. We are dealing with lives here, so there’s risk. But so far, we have been able to save many lives. Our statistics are comparable with good hospitals worldwide,” Lim stressed.

Dr. John G. Viola credited the nurses for being very helpful. “They actively participate in promoting other people’s well-being,” Viola said. Teamwork plus state-of-the-art facilities and a friendly approach to patients all ensure effective service. As to heart problems, Dr. Enrico Gruet, section head of non-invasive cardiology, said, “Prevention is the best thing to do, so before a heart problem can occur, it’s always best to be watchful of our food intake, physical activities and all.”

Lim, founder of the Cebu Heart Foundation (CHF), said after an operation, a patient is considered new, thus he has a new lifestyle ahead of him. Also present at the press conference were Dr. Peter Mancao, Dr. Arnold Tan, Dr. Francisco Chio Jr., and Dr. Judith Ann Fernando. CCC is the first heart center in the country to acquire Mennen Medical Horizon 9000WS, a computerized cardiac system for accurate and efficient diagnosis of cardiac diseases. For more information, one may call 253-7511 local 188.

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

MORE than just a friendly and accommodating sitting room, All Lines Travel Lounge (situated at Ayala Center Cebu’s south parking lot) provides ticketing services for air and sea travelers, computer and fax services, and daily package pickups for outbound destinations.

The management said the business center cum lounge started as a ticketing office in 1996 at the first level of the Ayala mall. In 1999, it transferred to the 40- square-meter area at the second level.

Manager Blessie Lintag emphasized that All Lines has partnered with more than 50% of the airline and shipping business firms so that issuance of travel tickets is done conveniently and quickly. “We issue airline tickets for destinations via Air Philippines, Asian Spirit, Cebu Pacific, Sea Air, etc. We also have available tickets for Ocean Jet, Cokaliong, Sulpicio, SuperCat and more. We also do daily pick-ups for outbound packages through FastPak,” Lintag enumerated.

Business center Beyond the ticketing and lounge area is an 11-cubicle business center where Internet surfing is available. “The business boxes are set up for those who want privacy in the usage of computers. We charge a relatively affordable amount per cubicle per hour,” Lintag said.

She added that a vending machine serving coffee and light snacks has been put up in the lounge area for added convenience among walk-in clients. All Lines is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during Mondays to Thursdays. On Fridays and Saturdays, it closes at 9 p.m., and 7 p.m. on Sundays.

Ng Khai provides 3Com cabling network for CNU, Western Wats

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

Ng Khai Development Corp. (NKDC) has announced that it recently installed 3Com technological network systems in Cebu Normal University (CNU) and Western Wats, a research-based call center at the Mactan Economic Processing Zone (Mepz).

This, after NKDC signed up 3Com as its gold partner. NKDC product manager Medel Villarubia said their company’s partnership with 3Com has produced the possibility of tapping corporate and institutional entities like CNU and WW to avail themselves of their cabling solutions for better transactions.

“We provided a campus-wide local area network for CNU. We used fiber optic cable to interconnect the three main buildings of the campus,” he said. “As for Western Wats, we did single-floor cabling that provides 270 data outlets for computers and 270 voice outlets for phones,” he added.

The 3Com switches have a lifetime warranty. 3Com country manager Kenneth Palacios noted that their company aims to provide solutions that scale up the needs of organizations. “We appoint Ng Khai for the partnership because of its dedication and presence in the South as well as its service excellence in terms of product development,” he said.

CNU on 3Com

CNU president Dr. Ester Velasquez said the university’s acquisition of such a cabling system was inspired by the order of the government to take several steps for information and communication technology to be learned by the students to the fullest. “With 3Com, we will be able to smoothen our operations. Computerizing all transactions in the campus is really our main goal,” she revealed.

Western Wats WW director of operations David O’Very said 3Com will enable their company to maximize and smoothen the accomplishment of research projects for their clients, being the only market research company in the country. “The technology will enable us to merge our data together and easily transmit them back to the supposed receiver like the United States for instance,” he told. Chris Mangelson is the Philippine center manager of WW.

Ratsky’s makeover in ‘FUNtasy’

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

THE sexy and theatrical rendition-type fashion show dubbed “FUNtasy: Let Loose of your Inhibitions” held in the evenings of Oct. 3 and 4 at Ratsky Mouse Trap and Bar in Ayala Entertainment Center was a combination of realism and fantasy.

Reality was seen in the way the models dressed up, which relayed a message that young people nowadays are more sophisticated and open-minded when it comes to wearing sexy clothes. Unreality was manifested in the wild gestures and in some costumes perceived as exaggerations of young women’s actuations today.

For the first time, Ratsky showcased such a daring yet dramatic fashion show that featured 10 Pegasus models from Manila, and some of Cebu’s local mannequins. “We’re introducing the show as a trial. If Cebu appreciates the concept, then we will bring it to other Ratsky outlets. We will still stick to our format which is to bring in Manila-based bands and give the Cebuano bands a chance to perform in our bar,” Ratsky-Cebu co-owner Hubert Fernandez said prior to the holding of the event.

During those nights, Ratsky was momentarily transformed into a new world of entertainment—creating an additional catwalk in front of the stage. "FUNtasy" concluded with a band jamming and dancing with Manila-based group Soulid.

The show’s stylist, model-actress Wilma Doesnt, let the “fashion guru” in her influence the choice of artistic and fashionable pieces worn by the models. Director Lary Asistin said in a press conference, “With Ratsky, we want the Cebuanos to let loose of their inhibitions. We will let them appreciate the thematic and theatrical forms, figures and moves of the models. This is no ordinary daring show. We have the concept and there’s drama in it.”

The models donned pieces from Bobson and Maldita as well as other provocative attire. Daring and too sexy, the show was, however, a success. More shows According to Cebu operations manager Jo Ann Sabangan, Ratsky has lined up more activities for October and November: Gladys and the Boxers with K on Oct. 17-18; Halloween Party, Oct. 31; and Ynez Veneracion with the Next Stage band, Nov. 2-11. She also announced the offering of new catering and party packages for all occasions, the birthday bash of Ratsky himself Randy Santiago, and the Ratsky Music Awards in February 2004.

Taft Property Building soon to rise at Cebu Business Park

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

Despite the rise and fall of a few businesses and amidst the national issues and challenges that beset the country today, Cebu finds another seed to nourish.

Yes, another project which puts weight on business convenience and accessibility, better transactions, and economic elevation. Highly technological in design and minimalist in physical guise, the Taft Property Building is expected to rise at Cebu Business Park early next year, sharing a similar economic vision with adjacent commercial buildings, which is to create impact in the lives of business individuals and the community.

A one-level infrastructure designed by RMJM Design Firm, the building is a fascination in itself as it deviates from the usual towering structure within the business hub. It will serve as the future home of four distinguished industry leaders of different disciplines: Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp. (HSBC), Taft Property Ventures and Development, Inc., Grand Holidays Travel and Tours, Inc. and Wealthbank.

Partnering leaders

The four establishments have undoubtedly created a niche in their respective fields and have continuously served their clients with professionalism, distinction in products and services, and dynamism. HSBC, the largest tenant among the four, is famed worldwide as one of the biggest, conservative and most profitable banks.

CEO Warner Manning admits a parallel belief with the developers of Taft Property Building: that Cebu is the “it” place in the Visayas and Mindanao, and has all the potentials to bring forth commercial developments.

A support team to the tourism and airline industries, Grand Holidays continues to pursue its commitment to provide friendly travel packages, excellent customer assistance, and good relationship with the tourism and hospitality sectors. Wealthbank, a new development bank operating in six locations in Metro Cebu, is celebrating its 37th anniversary today. It assures continued expansion to level up the leaders in the thrift bank category.

To broaden its existence, it will soon offer automated teller machine (ATM) and credit cards. It is majority owned by the Metro Gaisano Group with the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) and Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) as its equity partners.

Taft Property Ventures, after successfully developing homes for the Filipino community like Palm Heights, Palmas Verdes and Nichols Heights, remains one of the foremost developers of quality housing projects. It currently works on the completion of its fourth project. Groundbreaking Last Oct. 4, the partnering firms converged for the groundbreaking and blessing ceremonies of the building which is located right beside City Sports Club Cebu (CSCC).

Doing the ceremonial concreting were Taft Property board of directors Margaret Ang and Frank Gaisano along with Cebu Holdings, Inc. president Rene Almendras, HSBC CEO Warner Manning, Wealthbank president Ben Villamor, contractor Engr. Norberto Labos of Labos Construction and Development (LCD), architect Abelardo Tolentino of RMJM, and Marilou Pintor of Grand Holidays. The building’s glass windows, metal-framed foundation, 100% generator system support, sufficient parking, fine landscaping, guaranteed security, and consistent maintenance are collectively a proof of standardized operation.

Travel discount card seen to boost tourism

By Rudynah D. Entera

WITH already 165 Manila-based and 22 Cebu-based establishments officially accredited to grant special discounts to the holders of “Wow Philippines! Travel Discount Cards,” the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Expert Communications (EC) Graphics expect the country’s economic and tourism performance to improve.

'We developed the card where we get the establishments to speak for the country. This is no money-making scheme. Our goal is to boost tourism,” revealed Waxie Joaquin, one of the marketing associates of EC Graphics, the travel discount card’s major proponent based in Pasig City.

Tying up with the DOT, the team recently visited Cebu for a marketing blitz and meeting with DOT-7 Regional Director Dawnie Roa.

In a meeting with media at the Café Adriatico in Ayala Center Cebu, Joaquin said the discount cards are backed and endorsed by DOT Secretary Richard Gordon. The card comes in two kinds: the Pasyalan for local tourists valid for one year, and the Traveler for foreign tourists good for two months.

EC Graphics is given the mandate to develop, produce and market the discount cards to foreign and local tourists. The card serves as the official and exclusive DOT tourist card,” the memorandum of agreement (MOA) read. The MOA further said EC Graphics will contribute to the DOT, through its marketing and promotions arm Philippine Conventions and Visitors Corp., P50 for each membership card marketed.

The establishments are given the discretion as to the extent of their special discount privileges. The more the card is used in establishments located in Manila, Laguna, Tagaytay, Cavite, Boracay, Palawan, Puerto Galera, Cebu, Bohol, Davao, Iloilo, Subic and the rest of the country, the bigger the total savings a cardholder can have,” Joaquin said.

EC Graphics marketing director Vic Joaquin said collaterals and benefits are given to participating establishments that will honor the cards. The benefits include the opportunity to expand the participant’s market, free discount card stickers to post at the place of business, free online advertisement on www.traveldiscountcards.com, and additional marketing of the business abroad and nationwide through word-of-mouth advertising. 'We don’t charge joining fees for the establishments,” he stressed.

Waxie Joaquin said EC started penetrating the Cebu market this July, and so far, 22 establishments—mostly hotels, restaurants, shops and resorts—have signed up. Twelve have been invited lately and are awaiting final discount terms,” he said.

Other than travel agencies, Islands Souvenirs is one of the biggest accredited distributors of the Wow Philippines! Travel Discount Cards. As for Islands Souvenirs, we give the cardholders a 10 percent discount on all items purchased from any of our outlets nationwide,” said Lyndon Angan, vice president for marketing for the Aldeguer Group of Companies. Establishments in Cebu that honor the card include Alegre Beach Resort, Avis Rent A Car, Gayo, Nike Park, Islands Souvenirs, Human, Brescia Restaurant and Wine Shoppe, Cebu Beach Club, Days Hotel Cebu, Il Sole Ristorante, Lami-ah Filipino Seafood Restaurant, Lighthouse Restaurant, Maribago Bluewater Beach Resort, New White Gold House, Pulchra Resorts, Shangri-La’s Island Resort Mactan, Tambuli Beach Club East and West, A Taste of Mandarin, Waterfront Hotels and Casinos, and Cebu City Marriott Hotel.

PAL achieves 85-89% occupancy on Cebu-Narita flights

By Rudynah D. Entera

NOW that the country’s flag carrier, Philippine Airlines (PAL), flies five times a week from Cebu to Narita, Japan, it has consistently produced 85-89 percent occupancy in its 302-seater Airbus 330 flights.

This was revealed by the airline’s Mactan station manager Francisco Yngente IV after signing a contract with Sun.Star Cebu for a subscription of 101 copies per flight five days a week except Mondays and Saturdays.

Yngente, however, noted that the frequency would be increased to six flights a week starting late October. “From Cebu, the aircraft departs at 7:50 a.m. and flies back from Narita at 6:50 p.m.,” he said.

He added that passengers for Japan destinations are a mixed market composed of tourists, businessmen and Filipino entertainers. “Other than Cebu to Narita, we are servicing Japan-destined flights from Manila to Fukuoka, Nagoya and Narita. We also have chartered flights from Cebu to Nagoya and Fukuoka.” While Korean flights via PAL have established an almost 100 percent load factor four times a week, Yngente announced that the airline will soon fly from Manila to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia five times a week starting October.

PAL will also operate aircraft flying from Manila to Vancouver, Canada five times a week and pretty soon extend it to Las Vegas, USA. “By December, we’ll be adding domestic flights. The Manila-Cebu sector will serve flights almost every two hours,” he added.

Foreign airlines

He revealed that foreign airlines will also soon be offering Cebu destinations, with Continental Airlines eyeing the Cebu-Guam route; Qatar flying via Bangkok, Thailand; and Korean Airlines starting to do chartered flights. PAL administrative manager Gary Villegas said PAL is gradually recovering, leading to the full revival of flights that the airline used to have before the economic crunch hit the country and the world.

Foodex 2003 is the short term for Cebu Food and Beverage Exhibition which will be held simultaneously with Pack Pro Cebu and Hotel and Catering-Cebu. It runs from July 23 to 26 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino (WCCHC) in Lahug.

Events coordinator Patty Busano of Fairs and More, a sister company of the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines (ECCP), said they are expecting around 111 exhibitors to participate. “We aim to be one complete show na! We are glad IMS International is helping us in getting exhibitors while the Cebu Visitors and Convention Bureau (CVCB) primarily initiated the acquisition of sponsors and will take charge of the activities,” Busano said.

In last year’s exhibition, about 5,000 visitors, mostly industry players, attended the affair. “That was inspiring, and this time, we expect it to be even bigger!” Busano said. Seminars, demos Highlighting Foodex are simultaneous seminars to be given by foreign and local industry experts, raffle draws and special prizes, cooking demonstrations, competitions and special events.

Busano announced the launching program will be unique and grand. A cake slicing will take place followed by a bartending showcase and a major competition in the afternoon. A pizza making competition, a VIP showcase featuring the culinary expertise of selected guests, technical seminars and a themed cocktail party will be done on the second day.

The third day will highlight a “Provincial Food Showcase,” where visitors from Bohol and the Mindanao regions take part. “The most exciting is the Food Street that’s happening on the fourth day. It is open to the public. Items will be on sale and awarding ceremonies will be conducted during the latter part,” Busano said. Foodex 2003 is sponsored by Sun.Star Cebu, Jimac, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Smooth Jazz and Cebu Pacific.

CVCB eyes institutionalization of int’l. events promoting Cebu

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

In three year’s time, the Cebu Visitors and Convention Bureau (CVCB) will already have at least 160 members creating strong tie-ups with convention bureaus abroad and strongly institutionalizing international events that would push Cebu to the world.

This is envisioned by CVCB founding chairman Patrick Gregorio, who is also the president of Waterfront Hotel and Casinos. Gregorio said with 93 members at present, CVCB is not far from signing up more than a hundred tourism-affiliated companies and individuals as additional members by 2005.

Accredited as a non-government organization (NGO), it had its first anniversary last June 21. “CVCB is one good development by the International Association of Convention and Visitors Bureau through the Philippine Convention and Visitors Corp. (PCVC). With it, we really seek to have the private sector take the prime lead in promoting Cebu as a tourist destination,” Gregorio said.

Two of CVCB’s high-impact projects include the Queen City Run on Nov. 23 (tying up with MTV) and the First Cebu International Dancesport Competition in April 2004, to be held in coordination with the Cebu City Government and the Cebu City Sports Commission. “Other than these projects so far, we will still be working on more. At least four or five projects every year, that’s our target. By then, we can go international. Maybe we can also bring back the Asean Tourism Forum here,” noted Gregorio. He added, “We don’t need a lot of resources. We just need to be creative and resourceful to successfully promote Cebu and its eco-tourism aspects.”

CVCB’s thrust

A tourism graduate from the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Gregorio started his career for three and a half years with PCVC. There, he realized that financial constraints were more bureaucratic.

“I studied the ‘bureau’ concept in America. Each city there has a bureau, I found out. Now, I want CVCB to operate like any other business minus the politics,” he explained. CVCB aims to promote the city through all-out cooperation between corporate and government groups.

“However, our main thrust is to really create awareness that even if the Philippines has 7,107 islands, let us focus Cebu in our promotions. With P1 to 2 million budget for tourism, we are already promoting eight anchored destinations in the country,” he said.

Tie-ups abroad

CVCB has a marketing tie-up with the Hongkong Inbound Travel Association (Hita) to help out in the vast promotion of Cebu and vice versa, Gregorio said. Paul Leung is the chairman of Hita.

“With this tie-up, we can easily execute marketing strategies in Hong Kong, to start with. And perhaps, we can also promote Hong Kong to our local tourists. Anyway, all the mayors of Cebu are very supportive of our projects and tie-ups,” Gregorio pointed out. He said those in the hospitality and tourism fields consider CVCB as one of the best things that ever happened to Cebu in terms of tourism promotion.

E-Business picks Prime Asia as money transfer sub-agent

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

E-Business Services, Inc. (Ebsi) has just signed up Prime Asia Pawnshop (PAP) to be its 38th sub-agent for Western Union money transfer services and remittances.

Ebsi general manager Al Antonio Tad-y said the remittance industry is growing and limitless which is why his company decided to continuously expand and look for potential partners. “We would be strong in banks and pawnshops. As a direct agent of Western Union, we already have 38 sub-agents in 2,000 locations. We target having 50 partners and grow in as much as 2,500 locations nationwide within the year,” he said during the contract signing held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino (WCCHC) recently.

Ebsi was formerly known as Philcom, later renamed as E-biz. “Only five to 10% of the market has been tapped in the remittance industry. So, we really have a huge potential to intensify our business not only in Manila but also in Cebu and other provinces outside Luzon. We’re trying to grow with Prime Asia,” he added.

Ebsi chief operating officer Joel Eric Talosig said their operations are more visible in Manila-based supermarkets and banks like Banco de Oro, UCPB, Banco Filipino and Chinabank, among others. “Now partnering with Prime Asia pawnshop, I believe we will be able to effectively tap the market in the Visayas and Mindanao areas. They will provide the distribution network, we do the advancing of money,” Talosig said.

Prime Asia’s target

“This partnership with E-Business for money transfer services is really a welcome change. It is part of our growth being the only pawnshop in Asia Pacific that is ISO-rated in terms of effectiveness in management,” said PAP general manager Ernie Sanchez Enad.

He added that Prime Asia is now on a continuous process of expanding and intensifying its visibility in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. “We have just put up five branches in Cebu and six in Leyte. We are also operating in Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro and Camiguin island. In the next few months, we hope to add 40 more outlets,” he announced.

Enad said the pawnshop’s niche is customer service. Being the latest sub-agent of Ebsi, it puts its attention on how it can synchronize money remittance services apart from its guaranteed pawnshop services. The pawnshop turns a decade in August, Enad said.

Systems integration firm develops computer lab package for schools

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

“Our challenge is to provide the schools and universities with high-performing computer systems and value-added services at a less expensive package,” said Faith L. Atay, Cebu branch manager of Micro-D International Inc. (formerly known as Micro-D), a systems integration company.

“That is why we have developed a computer laboratory package as we want the schools to be wise and practical enough in installing computer systems for the students’ usage. We do almost everything for them—from network installment to designing and maintenance. We always make sure that our technical support is available to address one’s computer needs,” she said.

She added that with Dell (world’s leading computer systems company) as their PC systems provider, MDI can assure a dependable industry-standard technology, extensive reliability and compatibility, and smooth interoperability plus updated software.

Two of Dell’s powerful and flexible units are the Optiplex GX50 and GX240, which respectively offer a solution for simple task-based computing and Intel Pentium 4 configurations. Atay said they just installed computer units at the University of San Carlos (USC). The package’s key benefits are: less downtime; more reliable and faster processing as compared to cloned computers; no additional cost for spare parts and labor cost for the next three years; spare parts are available even after the warranty period; minimized headcount and broader experience in maintaining a computing system; single point of contact for technical support; no staff development overhead cost; immediate remedial services for operation of defective equipment; less investment budget; and engagement in a number of income-generating efforts for return of investment.

“MDI can package a broadband Internet connection so students can avail themselves of Internet in the laboratories. At the end of the leasing term, the university has the option to sell the computers to help the students acquire branded computers at cheaper rates,” the package explained. Existing in Makati, Davao and Cebu, MDI also seeks to penetrate hospitals and hotels.

“We have to be creative in terms of running programs to propel our efforts,” she stressed, also inviting everyone to participate in their series of technology seminars set this month.

Property Partnerships: investing at Metro Place is creating a dream

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

Either an urban-lifestyle residence or an income-generating unit, the choice is yours.

This is an option that Metro Place Serviced Residences condominium cum hotel, which will soon rise at the Metropolitan Club Complex along Estrella st., Makati city, gave after it conducted a project presentation recently at the Cebu Country Club in Banilad.

For the project proponents, the option is something to be taken into deep consideration by investors who meticulously want to generate a return on investment, and at the same time, acquire a high quality condominium unit for a fine lifestyle living. A 25-storey structure with 168 residential units and a fully serviced residence hotel feature, Metro Place, situated beside Rockwell and Bel Air, is a project of Property Partnerships, Inc. (PPI) and Buonarroti Holdings, Inc. (BHI) whose development approach is new, innovative and unique.

New and innovative, yes, because every unit comes with a Metro Club share and every buyer becomes our co-developer, our co-investor. As our buyer, your investment will be kept in a trust account,” said PPI CEO and chairman Luis Monserrat. He added, “To bring a new development scheme was our inspiration to come up with this condo-hotel and this scheme is really designed for Filipinos. We aim to provide our co-investors with the opportunity to gain assets at significant savings and a place that offers urban comfort and active life.

Perfect synergy

Buying a unit at Metro Place means creating a dream and moving a step closer to being rest assured that one’s investment will appreciate and add value to one’s life, said the developers. Metro Place plus Metro Club equals perfect synergy!” said Monserrat, adding that “getting a unit from us does not only assure you good investment, it also allows you to experience comfortable and active living knowing the fact that Rockwell is a premium urban community and it has become an inspirational icon nationwide.

High quality construction, comprehensive facilities and full service sports facilities are just half of the things that await every co-developer or buyer as there’s an easier access to shopping, entertainment and a wide variety of restaurants. It is also within easy reach of major malls.

Good investment

Monserrat noted that the project is based on the successful Comunidades concept from Spain that has provided investors with solid, worry-free opportunities for decades. Our first project to adopt the Comunidades concept is the Parque España in Alabang.

Metro Place will be built by way of a Real Estate Development Trust because we want our buyers/co-developers to be assured of an investment that reduces risk, can generate exceptional returns and is certain to appreciate. PPI and BHI are working hand in hand with their groups of seasoned professionals with proven track record: Mark A. Snowden & Associate, Palafox Associates, DCCD Engineering Corp., Hospitality International, Inc. (operator of Parque España) and PBCom Bank.

PPI also owns some properties managed by Cuervo Far East, Inc., a property consultants group that holds office at the Keppel bldg. in Cebu Business Park. For inquiries on rates and financing options, one may call PBCom at (02) 830-7000 or 818-2515 and look for Bobby Mangligot or 830-7058 and look for Alice Perce. One may also call PPI at 815-1959 or 752-3694 and BHI at 886-0601 to 05.

Hyundai is 2nd most reliable car

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

In the newest ratings of Consumer Reports magazine in the United States, Korean brand Hyundai (tied with Honda) ranks number two in reliability next to Toyota, said Hyundai Cebu Inc. president Eduardo Onglatco in a recent interview at the Cebu showroom on A.S. Fortuna st., Mandaue city.

Onglatco said the reliability ratings were based on surveys of 460,000 owners of vehicles up to five years old who were asked on problems about 2002 models. One of the world’s eight biggest carmakers, Hyundai aims to be among the top five by 2010.

New model

In the Philippines, Hyundai has been officially operating for three years (non-officially for seven years) and its Starex vans continue to be the best-selling passenger vehicles since they were introduced in 1996.

Onglatco said it has just launched its newest model called Matrix. He said Matrix is not only a sedan but also a multi-purpose vehicle as it has more passenger and cargo space, greater visibility, smoother drive, sliding and double-folded rear seats, expansive windscreen telltale lamps, extended side windows, extra headroom and revolutionary engine.

“This model is designed by Ferrari designer Pininfarina. Supposed to be for Europe, this really fits the Philippine market because Filipinos, I know, want something that is stylish and distinctive. It has a space that liberates,” said Onglatco who hopes to sell 20 units in a month.

Other features of Matrix are its four-wheel independent suspension fitted with MacPherson struts and coil springs; safety features with a driver side airbag for maximum protection; airy interior that allows for a relaxed journey on the road; and a storage system that lets one carry more luggage and keep travel essentials neatly organized. “Besides, the model is just reasonably priced as we would like to target the yuppies market. Matrix can be your companion in formal parties, daily undertakings and family outings or even out-of-town travels,” explained Onglatco, who also owns Cebuano Construction Supply and two Jollibee franchises located on Colon st. and on Mango ave.

He added that Hyundai Cebu seeks to launch three new models within the year: Santa Fe, Tuscany and Terracan. For inquiries, one may call 345-4146 or 346-2724.

Waterfront-Mactan to host first island festival, May 31

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

On May 31, Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino Mactan (WAH&C) will showcase all Lapu-Lapu city products, beauties and personalities in the first-ever grand festivity called the “Mactan Island Festival.”

This was announced by Rudy Villalobos of the Lapu-Lapu City Tourism, Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (LCTCHAC). “We are doing this for the first time with Waterfront-Mactan tying up with us and other barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) groups within the island. We do this not only for tourism purposes but also for economic progress,” he said.

WAH&C PR manager Joan Castillo said the whole-day affair will highlight the city’s products through a product showcase at the hotel lobby, float parades around Mactan, cultural presentations at the hotel lobby parking area, rave party and fireworks display by Pyrotechnics, and band performances by Lick and Triple Play bands. “This is like a modified Santacruzan. We are glad that the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), barangay officials and the tourism commission are supportive of this project.

The University of Cebu Dance Troupe will also do the street dancing during the parade,” said Castillo adding that the festival is done in time with the “Fiestahan sa Waterfront,” where all-Filipino food will be served at Café Uno until June 3. Among the products that will be featured are woodcarving and roof-making items, furniture, puso and lechon, tourist water transportation, Mactan stonecraft, lato and other seafood, the city’s famous guitar and shellcraft.

Personalities who will attend the float parade include First Lady Paz Radaza, Vice Mayor Norma Patalinghug, Rep. Nerissa Soon Ruiz, Carol Hiranpruck, Anna Marie Yap, Cristine Bersola, the new Miss Lapulapu, Queenie Amman and Mariquita Yeung. “We envision this festival to be an annual thing!” Villalobos said.

Coral Reef eyed as retirement village

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

What is currently Coral Reef in Mactan island will soon be converted into a huge retirement village that will house a number of senior citizens.

This was how Eddie Gil, chairman of Isang Bansa, Isang Diwa Foundation (IBIDF), envisioned the spot a few years from now. In a press conference held at the Vacation Hotel recently, Gil said the foundation is geared towards implementing projects for the needy and less-privileged, especially Cebuanos.

IBIDF has instigated numerous projects, two of which are a free hospital program and free maternity utilization. “Duol gyud sa akong kasingkasing ang mga Cebuanos. I was born a Cebuano so I have the heart for my fellowmen. I started from the very lowest means of earning money, but fortunately, I have gone far because I know I have to help some people who are really in need,” said Gil, who started out as a shoe-shine boy and now is an international businessman.

Gil established the foundation years ago to unite Filipinos through realistic means, provide employment for the jobless, and effectively execute projects to improve the country.

He also announced the foundation’s tie-up with the Korean government to bring to the Philippines some Korea-based firms to provide jobs to Filipinos and help implement some of the foundation’s goals like the construction of hospitals and houses and the reforestation project in Toledo, among others.

Vice chairperson Elizabeth Samson said, “The Korean government and our foundation’s president have already agreed that Korean products will be marketed here. Aakyat ang sweldo ng mga laborers. Narito kami upang makiisa at matulungan ang gobyerno. We are helping the government.” “We are also looking at the possibility of any IBIDF member going to Korea without any visa. That is possible, I know. But if we bring in companies from abroad like Korea, we don’t have any reason to leave the Philippines. Jobs available abroad will become abundant here. We are really working on that now that we have the support of the Korean government, headed by coordinator Deiji Kim,” Gil said.

Currently, IBIDF has 27 million members nationwide. It continues to conduct community outreach programs and transactions to realize its various projects.

All-Filipino resto opens in Lahug

By Rudynah D. Entera, PR-features writer

It all started out through orders, then catering for schools and banks, and now a restaurant in Lahug.

This, Lourdes Gomez of Lourdes Food Products and Catering Services (LFPCS) recounted during the recent launching of her all-Filipino restaurant at the Camp Lapu-Lapu gate in Apas.

“Binuksan ko ang Lourdes restaurant upang matikman nila ang mga pagkain ko. Since I started accepting small orders through a canteen at BPI in 1990, people have been looking for my food. This restaurant is a showcase area of my specialties,” the Leyteña said.

Gomez’s first sought-after foodstuff are chorizo, longaniza, tocino and meat roll. “I formally established LFPCS in 1997. I catered food for the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for four years and the University of the Philippines (UP) for three years,” said Gomez who, before putting up LFPCS, focused on catering for private occasions rather than being a canteen operator.

For six years now, her catering services and food products have been continuously patronized, from Chinese dishes to European specialties and Filipino fare. “But in this all-Filipino restaurant, we have our very own Pinoy seafood, grilled food and kare-kare as one of the famous dishes,” she noted. At Lourdes All-Filipino restaurant, food is savored ala carte style while the ambiance provides a second home to diners as the interiors and furniture have a Filipino appeal.

Metro Park to open sister hotel in 2004

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

A 160-room hotel will be operating sometime next year in Lahug, announced Abbe Alvarico, marketing and operations manager of Metro Park Hotel located in La Guardia, Lahug.

Called Crown Garden Hotel, the soon-to-be-launched establishment is Metro Park’s sister hotel designed to enclose two function halls. Alvarico said Metro Park has been widely recognized by the market (50% of which are foreigners) as a hotel that provides hassle-free wedding receptions, friendly condo-type room accommodation and personalized services.

“We basically opened the hotel last Sept. 18, 1999 with wedding functions as the prime focus. Also, we have condo-type rooms for long-term stays. In fact, the governor of Tandag, Surigao became the first owner of one of the units,” he revealed.

“Foreigners also comprise the biggest percentage of our clientele pie. They like hotels na papasok ang location, some place not really close to the main road, so that they get to experience a peaceful and private stay,” he added. He pointed out that it is important to give total guest service satisfaction and fine wedding packages for guests. Not only is the hotel offering affordable wedding packages and rates, it also takes part in the planning of the reception.

“We give the coordinators and couples some good pointers to achieve a momentous and grand celebration. As a general manager, I personally suggest a lot of things for clients to benefit from. Doing the wedding reception with a package deal is close to what the couples and families really want," said Alvarico.

Aside from the function halls, the rooftop of Metro Park is also a potential venue for both the wedding rites and reception. While still completing the infrastructure of Crown Garden Hotel, Metro Park said it is continuously upgrading its facilities. For information, one may call 233-3887 or 233-2352.

Ruiz Derma founder puts up healthcare giving institute

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

Ruiz Derma Centre (a beauty and healthcare salon) founder Dr. Fe Mantua-Ruiz has just established a healthcare training and educational institution called the Ruiz Beauty and Healthcare Training Institute (RBHTI).

“The first of its kind healthcare giving program will kick off with sessions on May 17,” said Ruiz, adding that it is accredited by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) and is specifically designed to produce quality and well-trained diploma holders equipped with the proper knowledge, skills and attitude to become and work as caregivers abroad.

As specified in the program module, students will be provided with every chance to learn and practice the required skills and operational knowledge necessary in the performance of the health caregiver job during the six-month theoretical training and one-month on-the-job-training (practicum). “They will also undertake rigid laboratory exercises for mastery of the language,” Ruiz pointed out.

She added, “We have noticed that caregiving jobs have been quite in demand these days. A number of Filipinos are very eager to take the risk to become a licensed caregiver. Our institute exists to provide comprehensive training for all those who aspire to become caregivers. This is now your chance.”

How to enroll

Ruiz said enrollees must have finished secondary education and obtained 72 units in college (two years). She said that after one has completed the program, he or she will be able to assess and understand the concepts and practices of healthcare giving; demonstrate self-esteem, safe and desirable work habits as well as proficiency in the English language; prepare food appropriate for children, the aged and differently-abled persons; perform first-aid and other health and safety measures; and describe the social, physical, intellectual, creative and cultural needs of the patient.

Enrolment requirements include transcript of records or certificate of transfer credentials for transferees, birth certificate, accomplished information sheet and two pieces of 2x2 colored picture.

“We really envision to be first as a global beauty and healthcare training educational institution,” Ruiz said. RBHTI, which offers reasonable course fees, has a session room, facilities and other equipment needed in the completion of the caregiving program. For inquiries on its course fees and schedule of sessions, one may call 262-8009, 261-2404 or email rbhti2003@yahoo.com.

Business Designs: creating ‘beauties for a cause’

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

With its active vision of involving individuals in the preservation of the environment and nature’s resources, the Miss Philippines and Miss Earth pageants have produced winners that are identified as “beauties for a cause.”

Thus emphasized Business Designs Philippines, Inc. (BDPI), a Cebu-based organizing group of the Miss Philippines search by Carousel Productions, after it successfully held the third Miss Philippines-Region 7 search last April 26 at the Casino Filipino-Mactan (CFM).

“For the third time, the search is done here in Cebu. Year by year, we carry on the legacy of producing and empowering beautiful and intelligent Filipinas to become environment-conscious individuals, thus beauties for a cause,” said Jimmy Lucero, who together with spouse Susan, has initiated the production of the regional search since 2000.

This year, Evangeline Natalie Tarin of Talisay city bested 10 other hopefuls to be crowned the Miss Philippines-Region 7. She also won as Miss Ponds and Miss Talent. (The talent presentation was held at Ratsky in Ayala Entertainment Center last April 19.) Tarin will represent the whole Central Visayas in the national search set on May 11 in Metro Manila. Whoever wins in the national pageant will represent the country in the Miss Earth international pageant sometime in October.

Cheryl Pelayo of Dumaguete city and Laila Lijlyana Muller of Cebu city complete Tarin’s court as first and second runners-up, respectively. Other candidates were Jennifer Lane Frerkes of Bohol, Christie Anne Villareal, Crystal Claire Casidsid, Erren Mae Manuel, Alma Gabisan, Jill Bollozos, Lailani Taclob and Saxony Abarquez. Night of beauties at the casino For the first time, CFM hosted the regional search, which was directed by Nina Paras and choreographed by Marlon Wafer Garcia.

Philippine Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) Cebu branch manager Enrico Livelo said they were honored to host the event. For the Pagcor people, providing the venue for the search added to the vibrancy of the teatro as they always seek the convergence of Filipinos for entertainment and pleasure.

“We always have the teatro to give venue to any minor or major exciting shows like Miss Philippines,” said Livelo. Hosted by Rudynah Entera and Chuck Vosotros, the pageant gathered bigwigs from sponsoring companies like the Waterfront Airport Hotel and Casino (WAH & C), the official residence of the candidates; CFM; Vaninades, official casual dress provider; JV Shop & Shop, communication equipment supplier; Sorella, official swimsuit; and SuperCat, official sea carrier during the contestant’s Region 7 visits. Other sponsors were La Tegola Italian Restaurant, Grand Convention Center of Cebu, Red Carpet Catering, Raphael Wallets, CityLite 89.9, Charlie 101.9, UR 105 and Fuji Film.

Comprising the panel of judges were WAH & C manager Chris Cuevillas, Pagcor director Phillip Lo, Miss Philippines-Air 2002 Justine Gabionza, Carousel Productions marketing manager Pam Dinglasan, TV commercial model Paolo Relucio, Cordova Mayor Arleigh Sitoy (who represented Bukidnon Rep. Miguel Zubiri) and Lapu-Lapu City Vice-Mayor Norma Patalinghug. Philippines Airlines (PAL) and Myra 300-E extended their support in terms of transportation and health supplementation. They said “supporting Miss Philippines is like being concerned about the environment.” Unilever Philippines gave away products for the winners and the rest of the candidates, including the show’s organizers.

Experience beyond pageant per se

The pageant is where a lady realizes her dream to become a beauty queen and acquires good experiences which include establishing friendship with the other ladies, enhancing personal values and skills through workshops and discovering wonderful spots through tours.

These, according to Susan Lucero, are what make the search exciting, relevant and memorable. She said this year’s regional candidates toured Bohol and Siquijor, savored dishes at some of Cebu’s best bistros and enjoyed the pre-pageant activities like short sessions on personality development, poise and public etiquette. With the tours, the ladies realized how the environment should be taken care of and given much attention so that it can be preserved.

Focusing on the preservation of the environment is one thing that the Miss Philippines and Miss Earth pageants are being recognized. Miss Earth now ranks as the third famous international beauty search worldwide, next to Miss World and Miss Universe. BDPI is a member of the Cebu Visitors & Convention Bureau (CVCB) and the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI). (RDE)

Manor-style houses soon to rise in Banawa

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

Five duplex structures or a total of 10 homes will soon be erected along Banawa road.

This, after Climaco Realty and Development Corp. (CRDC) completes its housing project called South Pointe Manor on R. Duterte st. sometime in June.

The developer said this is its second project. The first was San Agustin Heights in Tisa, Labagon where 90% of the properties have already been sold. The remaining 10% are still available. CRDC added that aspiring duplex house owners at South Pointe can expect a homey atmosphere, well-designed home structures, and peaceful, private yet accessible living. These features are all incorporated with sophistication and great quality in terms of home style, CRDC said.

“It’s safe. It is going to be a well-guarded, closed subdivision. It can be accessed either through Happy Valley or the Capitol road,” the developer pointed out. Interested parties may call 262-0380 or 262-0389.

Eventually, Cebuanos will get to discover the uniqueness of Baybay, Leyte, said Baybay Councilor Vicente “Vicvic” Veloso.

Veloso is spearheading the partnership between Ocean Jet Ferries, Inc. and the municipality in providing sailing schedules from Cebu to Leyte and vice versa (via Camotes) through high-speed trips via Ocean Jet 3.

During his recent visit to Cebu, Veloso told the media that the tie-up venture takes a sense of urgency and relevance for Leyte—with its goal to grow in terms of tourism and economy. “In reality, a number of people from Baybay come to Cebu to study and parents usually visit to check on them. Besides, businessmen and wholesalers purchase supplies here. People from Cebu also visit Leyte for fiestas and other purposes. With this scenario, we need a convenient travel link and we’re thankful that Ocean Jet has thought of servicing routes bound for Baybay,” said Veloso, who is also the chairman of Bohol Agriventures Inc.

He added that with the Baybay trips through Ocean Jet’s high-speed craft, there’s an anticipated episode for people to discover the uniqueness of Baybay—its exciting nature, numerous rivers, virgin forests, pension houses, fresh resorts and historical scenery.

Baybay has the biggest population among the Region 7 towns except the cities which have 100,000 people residing, Veloso added. “We’re ready to serve the market, I believe so. Our venture becomes easier as Baybay is investing in port facilities aside from pursuing the improvement of its food terminal, the ongoing construction of two oil mills and the improvement of farm-to-market roads,” said the shipping firm’s marketing manager, Erwin Biaño. He added that there are two trips from Cebu to Baybay and vice versa. “It’s Ocean Jet 3 that takes the trips. It accommodates 285 passengers. Our dream is to be the biggest operator of high-speed crafts,” he said, also announcing the acquisition of a brand-new twin-vessel of Ocean 3 and 5.

Cebu Derm Haven specializes in cellulite removal, iontophoresis

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

Medical facials, endermology and iontophoresis are what Cebu Derm Haven (in Tabunok, Talisay city and Raintree Mall on Mango ave.) is specializing in, revealed clinic owner Dr. Cecilia Bernad.

Having finished dermatologic studies and facial surgery training from the Institute of Dermatology in Bangkok, Thailand, Bernad said her clinic does not only provide the usual facials and skin peelings.

It also specializes in wart removal, endormology or cellulite removal, trichloroacetic acid peel (TCA chemical peel) and the so-called iontophoresis, a 12-session delivery of medication to skin tissues without the use of needles. We have been licensed to do cellulite removal since we started operations in 2000. Most importantly, we offer this iontophoresis medication which enhances the skin. Other than that, I have a clinic in Perpetual Succour Hospital (PSH) that addresses fat excess among men and women through liposuction using the intense pulse light and heat machine,” she said.

Reasonably priced and carefully executed, the services at Cebu Derm Haven are designed not merely to treat skin problems. “We also want people to experience some rejuvenating, relaxing and pampering moments away from the pressures of work and business,” Bernad pointed out.

At her clinic at the eighth floor of PSH, she offers services such as collagen injection to improve the surface of the skin; fat lipo transfer which is done by getting some fats from other body parts and transferring these to the face; hair removal; photo rejuvenation, blemish removal; and severe acne and varicose vein treatments.

Derma haven’s birth

Actually, after I finished Medicine from Cebu Institute of Medicine (CIM), I went home to Misamis and later agreed with my friend to open a derma clinic here in Cebu. Our first branch is in Tabunok while this Raintree Mall outlet is our second one,” Bernad said.

She admitted that her best reward as a dermatologist is when patients come to tell her how she has greatly improved their skin. Currently, we are slashing our rates on facial services,” said Bernad, who believes that a good skin is one which is clean, smooth, blemish-free, supple and soft. Aside from visiting the dermatologist once or twice a month, there has to be a basic regimen to be maintained on one’s skin,” she advised.

Kids, young adults encouraged to take personality dev’t. course

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer

Kids, teenagers and young adults are urged to take the Young Image Course (YIC), a one-month intensive personality development program established by image personality consultant Mariecor Salas-Ding.

The course starts on April 21 and ends on May 17 at SM City-Cebu, said Ding’s son, Adrian, who is one of three boys (with Dexter and Conrad) facilitating the seminars. “Admittedly, my mom grew up to be very shy and awkward but after finishing a special program for personality development (Perd) from Le Chatelain in Switzerland, she became confident, better and proud. From then on, she wanted to integrate the same concept in the Philippines with Cebu as the test market, so that she developed the young image course in 1988,” the young Ding recounted.

He added that this year’s edition of YIC is something big. “We are now on our 16th year, and for the first time, we are doing workshops simultaneously in Cagayan and Manila. We cover the A to Z of Perd,” he said. The course includes leadership and character development, team-building, social graces, visual poise and posture, communication skills, fashion and clothes sense, grooming, modern etiquette, basic and advanced modeling, among others.

New modules include Dating 101, room decorations and arts and crafts. Ding said they don’t want the students to be overloaded with pure theories, thus they are adopting the “fun with new friends while learning” strategy in their day-to-day classes.

He added that the program will culminate with a mega-fashion show featuring the graduates on the catwalk showcasing the latest line of clothing and apparel from the most hip brands in the market today and from topnotch designers. “Other than the fashion show and the overnight camp, we are also trying to come up with a ball or a promenade. We’ll teach them how to behave properly in a ball. The fashion show is designed to gauge the level of confidence among the students,” Ding said, also encouraging interested parties to enrol as soon as possible as slots are limited.

Discounts are offered for groups of five and more and early birds who sign up during the Holy Week. For reservations, one may call 256-8417, 253-3425 or 0918-9386124.

ArcTech: providing more than just PC systems, biz solutions

by Rudynah Entera, PR-features writer
ArcTech Solutions, Inc. is no ordinary computer business. From a provider of personal computer systems, it has progressed (since its opening in August 2001) into an avenue where corporate information technology solutions can be largely acquired to get hold of the most cost-effective technological breakthroughs in the market.
This is just a part of what the company can offer as revealed by information technology management expert Ryan Raymund Yu (also a PruLife financial adviser) who, along with computer engineer Andrew John Young and friend Leo Vincent Zafra, established ArcTech as “a company driven by innovation, service and God.” I first stumbled into this company named Advanced Microdevices Processors or AMD through net browsing or so. I got interested in it for I myself am a computer hobbyist. I do some PC upgrading every now and then. I discovered something great about AMD, so why not put up a computer business to justify the edge of these processors? Uy murag nindot ni nga business,” Yu recounted how he thought of putting up the company.
ArcTech’s chief marketing and administration officer, Yu said there is more to it than just mere system support for computer hobbyists and extremists. ArcTech also assists in providing personalized or arctified home, small office and business solutions, and addresses the needs for systems integration, software development, computer repairs and makeovers, among others.
Tell us how significant AMD processors are in your operation.
As the main engine of ArcTech, AMD processors have enabled us to provide cheaper yet outstanding performance in our “arctified” home, small office and business solutions. AMD blows competitors away as it is cheaper and faster. Besides, all AMD processors come with a three-year warranty.
Do you have specialized departments that address the needs of your clients?
We actually have four divisions: computer assembly, software development, computer hospital and cold blood or case mods. These departments collaborate hand in hand to provide quality, simple, relentless and arctifying services incorporated with innovation and creativity, of course.
Can you briefly tell us the specific focus of each division?
The computer assembly, which is handled by trained and skilled technicians, is dedicated to go beyond just packaging a CPU, keyboard and monitor for the client but creating a powerful system of solutions. Software development is in charge of developing software packages to augment the hardware provided to simplify and streamline business processors. The computer hospital takes charge of solving software corruption, wear and tear of computers and troubled systems and processing. In here, we treat computers as hospital patients and we really diagnose the problem. Finally, the cold blood division is where the arctifying process comes in progress, which also tells us that a computer is not just a machine it is an experience as well.
What other services do you provide?
Anything that has to do with systems integration, we address it. Aside from provision of PC systems as well as doing some computer repairs and makeovers or modifications, we also offer webpage designing, software development and assembling or arctifying of parts to develop computer units that are of fine quality and standards with that of branded ones. What’s most fascinating about it is how we customize the look of the computer, like we change the color of its monitor covers into something really sophisticated.
What is your edge of sustainability in the business?
Trained staff, skilled technicians, 100% ensured computer part compatibility and a three-year warranty on all AMD processors. Even if we have some modifications on the unit, we still acknowledge the three-year warranty. We have arctified systems that are tested for a minimum of 72 hours with different burn-in software and benchmark utilities to maintain standards. Cables are intricately tied and kept to reduce maximum airflow. Our state-of-the-art sales service provides fast response, informed expertise and consistent quality customer service. We don’t want to give only a PC system, we also want to give you a solution to every problem you have with computers.
What else are encouraging about ArcTech so clients will tap your services and solutions?
We always strive to cover users in both spectrums with one common thrust, which is quality yet low-cost solutions. Through our customized design and user-ambiance, unmatched after-sales service and strong and continuing partnerships with customers, we greatly hope to become a major player in the industry. With us, you are not just buying a friend but you are likely acquiring a friend as well. And what drives the company is ultimate energy—that is, the synergy of our very own enthusiasm to ensure end users’ satisfaction.

Taft Property’s newest venture gives families California-style living
Filipinos may now experience California-inspired living in the sun-drenched slopes of Tabok in Mandaue city.
This was announced by Taft Property Ventures, Inc. (TPVI) when it officially blessed and opened the gates of its newest residential address called Palm Heights, designed by Arch. Richeto C. Alcordo.
TPVI chief operations officer Marivic Secretaria said the three house models offered at the subdivision are: Isabel, a four-unit pueblo-style residence celebrating modern-day living with pleasant functionality; Beatriz, which sets a smooth and unassuming façade whose quadruple-home design makes a warm, neighborly get-together; and Sofia, crafted with understated elegance built to last with a tiled-roof design embracing a Spanish mission-style architecture.
“After successfully unveiling Nichols Park and Palmas Verdes, we are glad to give you Palm Heights which basks in more than two hectares of flourishing greens, landscaped gardens and tree parks,” Secretaria said. She added that Palm Heights projects an outstanding contemporary expression of the sunny California suburbs and dwells in one of the 140 superbly designed Pacific mission-style homes.

Spa, Facial & Salon cites benefits of natural ingredients for skincare

Looking beautiful takes a proper regimen and consistent choice and usage of skincare products. But for professional beauty therapist Maria Teresa Trinio, “going back to basics” makes a healthy, blooming and nice skin.

“It is always best to go for natural components,” she said prior to the launching of her beauty spot called Spa, Facial & Salon situated along Shangri-la st. in Labangon.

The only Filipina who was awarded and licensed by Cidesco Section Australia (joining the ranks of the Advanced Association of Beauty Therapists) with an overseas affiliate membership until 2004, Trinio decided to put up the salon here in Cebu with one mission – to share the wonders and advantages of using organic or natural ingredients for ladies (and men) to attain a healthier, nicer skin.

There are many salons in Cebu. Why did you decide to put up one here?

Believe it or not, I used to have a terrible skin problem. I had angst on my pimples and acne before. But within my three and a half years of studying professional beauty therapy and beauty care in Australia, I was able to find a treatment for my facial problem. The betterment of my skin and facial texture was a good inspiration. Why not put up my own salon in Cebu so I can share with my clients things on how I improved my skin?

Your salon is in Labangon. Haven’t you considered putting it up in a mall or a hotel perhaps? Having a salon inside a mall or a hotel is good. But I desired to be closer to the residences of my customers. The nearer to them, the better and the more personalized my services will be. I am originally from Bacolod but I am very in love with Cebu. Well, I was fortunate to find a strategic location in Labangon, just along the main road.

Did you enhance your knowledge on skincare in Australia only? I also had some trainings and hands-on in Tokyo, Japan for two years. Also, I’m certified as an Obagi user. I am currently continuing my studies in this field. In fact, I am scheduled to go back to Australia for it then come again to Cebu for improvement and hopefully, expansion of my salon.

What is it that your salon is distinctively using and offering? The products I use are more organic, not chemical-based. I’ve got milk, oats, honey, tea tree extracts, natural aesthetics from Australia, White & White from Japan and most of all, the Kakyoka powder which is a whitening ingredient. Aside from facials, I also offer foot spa, anti-aging and distressing massages and cosmetic tattoo. A lot more will be offered soon.

What about this pampering foot spa? Not only a massage will be done on both your feet to relax, we also wrap your lower legs with oats mixed with green tea to get that lovely and smooth effect after 30 minutes.

What about your facial? Because we use natural ingredients, there is no harsh effect. For those very visible pimples or acne, we use hi-frequency laser. While your face gets toned and massaged by the organics we placed on it, we also give you a complimentary head and neck massage. That’s perfectly pampering, isn’t it so?

How do you keep up with competition? We will add and reinvent appropriate facials that fit the environment and address market demands. We’re not high-priced. Hopefully, I will be offering “tummy-lypolycist” for those who want to trim their waistline down. My three professional staff and I will offer the treatment harmoniously.

What is your advice to keep a healthy body and skin? Give yourself some pampering rejuvenation, but don’t be too vain. Visiting the salon once or twice a month is good enough to treat yourself. Eat properly, of course. Be educated to choose which products fit your skin type. Above all, it’s always best to use natural or organic products. (Rudynah D. Entera, PR-features writer)

Air Philippines marks 7th year

“This 2003, we celebrate seven great years as an airline. May you always be with us as we soar high in the Philippine skies,” said Ma. Perpetua C. Baldemor, Visayas area head of Air Philippines Corp. (APC) in her talk at the airline’s seventh anniversary celebration held last Feb. 17 at the Rosal Room of Shangri-La’s Mactan Island Resort.

A “Fly High” celebration in the Queen City of the South, the affair gave highlight to the winners of the first-ever Air Philippines Travel Girl search and its seven most frequent flyers.

APC senior vice president for marketing and sales Patria Chiong, who is the brain behind Travel Girl 2003, said the search was conceptualized to recognize the role of women in social responsibility and to raise the awareness level of the ladies especially the winners. “We’re glad to have produced winners who will be part of the traveling industry and the corporate world,” Chiong said.

Renowned designer Renee Salud attended the occasion. As APC consultant, he presented the Travel Girl winners to the media and guests. Picked Travel Girl 2003 is Nicole Rose Calumpang from Dumaguete city, while Tony Michelle Su from Davao city and Joan Christine Uy from Cebu city are the Travel Girls for Mindanao and Visayas, respectively.

Travel Girl for Luzon Catherine Claire Corpus wasn’t able to attend the event. The seven frequent flyer awardees are Department of Tourism 7 director Dawnie Roa, Mactan Cebu International Airport manager Angelo Verdan, Nissan-Cebu president Peter Yap, OMF Literature manager Crisanto Manalo, Royal Christian College president Roy Book, Frederico Fruto and Edgardo Nicolas of Supercat.

Holiday escapades

In time for its seventh year celebration, the airline company is offering vacation packages for holiday escapades in Bacolod, Boracay, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Dumaguete, General Santos, Iloilo, Puerto Princesa, San Jose Mindoro, Kalibo, Zamboanga and Manila.

APC said the packages are convenient and cost-efficient for a holiday or business trip. These include roundtrip airfare, hotel accommodation, daily breakfast and roundtrip airport transfers (except in Manila). For reservations and inquiries, one may call (032) 255-8492, 341-0920 (Cebu) or (02) 855-9000 (24-hour reservation number).

Exciting programs

APC has also come up with interesting membership packages and programs for avid flyers: the Traveler’s Plus, Fly High Rewards, Sportsman’s Plus and Traders Plus.

APC said Traveler’s Plus is a special air traveler’s package that offers the convenience of a checking account and provides a hassle-free ticket issuance and guaranteed fare for one year from date of purchase.

Fly High Rewards is a membership program which allows loyal passengers to exchange points with top-of-the-line premium items. The more points one gets, the more perks he receives, APC said.

Sportsman’s Plus gives additional free baggage allowance for sports gear: 35 kilos for mountaineering equipment, 25 kilos for surfboard scuba gear, and 15 kilos for fishing equipment, bowling balls and golf bags. Traders Plus is Air Philippine’s businessman’s membership program that gives an additional 15-kilo free baggage allowance to business owners, officers and authorized representatives. (Rudynah D. Provider of roofing materials to expand through dealership

We are looking into dealership expansions in Iloilo, Bacolod and other areas in the country,” said Lynn Balbuena, sales and operations manager of Multi-Line Design Systems, Inc., a leading provider of various premium roofing materials.

We’ve been visible in Manila, Davao and Cagayan de Oro, but we still hope to expand further and target subdivisions,” she added. For six years in Cebu, Multi-Line has been providing architects, designers and walk-in clients imported roofing systems related to ventilation, architectural and building systems and other numerous products and services it offers.

Most of our products are from the United States, Malaysia and New Zealand. We started out as an exclusive distributor of roof shingles. Now, we’re into architectural and building systems, automatic gates, tiles, soffits, ceilings, shutters and vents, mouldings and cornices and a lot more,” said Balbuena, who officially assumed her position October of last year. With more or less 35 products offered, Multi-Line trains its people on how to become “better implementation-people”. We also want to establish public awareness among our clients about the products and services that we cater. Though we target the high-end market like business establishments and tourism structures, we also have few offers for the middle-end ones. We always make sure to upgrade our products to be competitive in the industry,” she added.

In Manila, Multi-Line takes a dominant market share, while Tagaytay city is a Multi-Line city as almost 90% of its establishments avail themselves of its products, Balbuena said. Maintaining the cell site of Smart Communications in Cebu, Multi-Line is also geared towards providing the needs of architects who have always aimed to produce designs that blend the needs of aesthetics, man’s habits, whims of nature, location and cost. Cebu Doctors’ 1st in Vis-Min to offer complete nuclear medicine services

Cebu Doctors’ Hospital (CDH) is now offering complete nuclear medicine services with the advent of the brand-new G.E millennium MPR gamma (spect) camera as replacement of the old one.

Simultaneous with the introduction of the equipment was the opening of its Cebu Eye Institute and minor operating room last Jan. 24. “We are proud to be the first one to (offer) complete nuclear medicine services throughout the Visayas and Mindanao,” said Dr. Blesilda Pono, the hospital’s nuclear medicine specialist.

“We give the patients a radioactive iodine therapy that is intended to treat thyroid cancer and toxic goiter. The radioactive material is of low energy, so it does not harm the body,” she added. CDH’s nuclear medicine department caters to renal, bone, gastrointestinal, oncology and infection, thyroid, cardiac and pulmonary illnesses. Heart, brain and bone scans as well as radioactive and bone pain therapy are among its top-of-the-line services.

In terms of hospital rates, medical director Dr. Potenciano V. Larrazabal, Jr. revealed that these have been the same for the past four years. “These services we are launching now are fantastic and convenient, cost-effective most especially,” he said.

Minor operating room

The minor operating room (OR) is at the ground floor, within the same complex where the endoscopy unit is. Endoscopy unit head Dr. Lamberto Garcia said the new unit is equipped with two operating tables that allow the execution of two simultaneous surgical procedures.

The minor OR is designed to treat patients who seek surgical intervention under local anesthesia on an out-patient and in-patient basis.

Cebu Eye Institute

Another milestone for CDH was the opening of the Cebu Eye Institute that offers a broad range of specialized services in eye care. “After we have successfully opened our Center for Sight I, we’ve set up the Center for Sight II which is intended for complicated cases in ophthalmology.

Undertaking a successful surgery here using our lasers, 90% assured, you will no longer be using eyeglasses na,” said Dr. Potenciano “Yong” Larrazabal III, chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology.

The institute is academy-affiliated and is a subspecialty-oriented resource for the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, and orbit and neuro-ophthalmic disorders. Larrazabal said they primarily focus on advanced medical and surgical therapy of all conditions affecting the anterior and posterior segments, ocular adnexa, and optic nerve.

Cebu Eye Institute routinely provides services such as comprehensive evaluations, laser treatment for retinal and vitreous problems, computerized visual fields, laser treatment for infants with retinopathy of prematurity, among others. (Rudynah D. Entera, PR-features writer)

Ocean Jet to acquire new vessel

After it acquired its fourth vessel, Ocean Jet 5, last month, Ocean Fast Ferries Inc. is planning to purchase another one in March, announced marketing manager Erwin Biaño.

“Jet 5 momentarily serves Tagbilaran as we are dressing up Jet 3. Hopefully, we will be doing some trials before launching our fifth vessel, Ocean Jet 6, come March,” he said.

Currently, the company operates four vessels that service passengers bound for Bohol, Camotes, Tagbilaran, Hilongos, Leyte and Dumaguete. Biaño added that they do regular maintenance checks on the vessels, which is once a week. For more reliable service, there are spare vessels on standby when the need arises.

As a Chinese New Year promo, prices of tickets to Tagbilaran, Tubigon and Dumaguete have been slashed down.

‘Libreng Eskwela’ promo

Biaño spoke of the firm's “Libreng Eskwela” tie-up promo with Nature’s Spring Water and STI eCollege, which runs until April 26. For every single ticket of business class accommodation or two tickets of tourist accommodation, the passenger gets a raffle entry which has to be enclosed in an envelope together with any variant of Nature’s Spring Water as proof of purchase.

“Two winners of a 100% scholarship in any course at STI eCollege-Cebu will be drawn as grand prize winners. For the second prize, three winners will get a free short-term course and for third prize, we’ll have two winners to get any short-term course for free,” Biano said. Fashion 30th in malls
By Rudynah Entera
Does culminating the month with a mall fashion show make sense? It does and will continue to create a huge impact especially among the fashionistas, believes Creworks Asia (a PR-advertising-special events management group) manager Victor Acosta, prompting him and his creative team to organize a fashion show called “Fashion 30th”, intended to be held at the end of every month.
Tying up with Islands Souvenirs and Renew Placenta beauty soap and beauty cream, the production group held a big launch for the show at the entertainment plaza of SM City Cebu last Jan. 31. “Well, hopefully this will be a monthly thing to look forward to. We’re doing it for three months in SM, and probably in other malls citywide,” said Butch Oporto, one of Creworks Asia’s executives who hosted the show and was one of the models at the same time.
Romping on the well-set stage was a combination of Cebu’s neophytes and veteran models, backed up by the Mega Boys dancers. SM City Cebu’s Star Image Model 2001 Van Ernest del Mar surprised the spectators with his appearance, clad in Rough Rider Jeans (RRJ) and an orange shirt. He strutted on the catwalk together with fresh and good-looking Jay, Lyle, Rey and Butch, and curvaceous Jacquelyn, Maxine, Cindy and Karen. All of them were in RRJ’s “Feel it”, “Absolutely Fabulous” and “Iko-iko” outfits.
Highlight of the show was the segment where models danced while they romped. Genevieve Gozums’s “Hindi Sad Diamonds” collection was a showcase of flowery, soft, brown, neutral skirts and blouses worn by Joy, Jessica, Jovelyn, Malou, Ferly and Janice while Salad Dressing’s “Yeke yeke” and “Sundance” collections gave smart ideas for young ladies fond of sleeveless and long-sleeved tops and knee-length skirts.
Twelve-year old model Princess, who wore Salad Dressing’s “Sundance”, Blanc’s “Something Stupid”, RRJ’s “Sexy Thing” and “Hero” outfits was a crowd favorite. Special outfits featured in the show were creations by Esperanza Salibay of La Mode Fashion and Bernardo Flores. The former’s “La Notte Etterna” and the latter’s “Adiemus” formal masterpieces were given shape and elegance by models Jacquelyn, Victor, Maxine, Karlo, Cindy, Rey, Karen, Loel, Ferly, Malou and Janice. Blanc’s ‘70s medley and RRJ’s fashionable clothes of the ‘80s and ‘90s were proof enough that “retro will always be in”. Models sashayed—the girls in mermaid-inspired outfits and the boys in side-decorated jeans—to nostalgic songs like Dancing Queen, Buttercup, My Sharona, Chameleon, Just Can’t Get Enough and Uptown Girl. RRJ’s “Hero” collection was a mix of nobleness and sophistication in cut and style, as showcased by Genes, Jay, Van, Butch, Lyle, Princess, Jessica, Jovelyn, Cindy, Karen and the show’s director Dante Balboa. Dante (Diana Zubiri’s leading man in the movie Kasiping) and Karlo (of PLDT’s Hello Billy! TV ad) were Manila celebrities who were part of the fashion show.
Victor of Southwestern University, winner of the Mr. University tilt, was also among the models. Not only does Fashion 30th seek to update fashion aficionados on what’s in and what’s not, it also hopes to be an entertaining month-ender among mall shoppers. “Moreover, it is a good venue for beginning models to enhance themselves and get exposure until they become really good fashion models,” pointed out Del Mar, the most veteran model of the lot. Contributing to the show’s success were RRJ, Skycable, Air Philippines, Informatics Computer Institute, Rai Rai Ken Ramen House and Sushi Bar, Ruiz Derma and Spa, Mango Park Hotel, Desires Studio, The Freeman, Kimbel International, Hotel de Mercedes, Mellow Touch, Papa Heinz Pizza, Killer Bee and Annie’s Beauty World.

Surigao del Sur plans to boost eco-tourism spots
Surigao del Sur has a lot of potentials in tourism, forest resources, mining industry, marine resources and agriculture, allowing its government to currently work on the enhancement and development of these fields.
With this, the province is about to graduate from the ‘club 20 forest provinces’ in the country, Gov. Vicente T. Pimentel told Cebuano journalists in a courtesy call during the familiarization tour recently organized and sponsored by Asian Spirit (AS) Airline, the country’s first airline cooperative that flies from Cebu direct to Tandag (Surigao Sur’s capital city) secondary airport.
Tandag Mayor Marybeth Delgado and AS-Tandag general sales agent and provincial prosecutor Rey (husband of Marybeth) accommodated the participants and toured them to potential tourist destinations and business spots in the province.
Courtesy calls and press conferences with Mayors Lillian Lozada of Cagwait, Manuel Alameda of San Agustin, Algerico Irizari of Lanuza and Tomasa Guardo of Cantilan were also conducted. The mayors talked about the tourism plans and projects for their respective municipalities.
Biggest iron deposit
Delgado said Surigao del Sur still has the biggest iron deposit in the world and remains the richest in forest resources especially narra.
“Surigao is open to any investment. In fishery, daghan kaayo dinhig alimango and we also have lots of lobsters and prawns, however, no means of transportation is available to bring these to Cebu, that is why we invited Asian Sprit to fly to Tandag,” she explained.
The province is also rich in tuna. In fact, more than 28 kilos of big tuna can be caught using the hook and line. Abaca-weaving, Kaliguan festival Lozada spoke about the Nagkahiusang Kababayen-an sa Cagwait (NKC), an association that makes abaca-weaving a source of livelihood.
“Aside from livelihood, we have trainings on abaca-weaving—more of local consumption. People from abroad purchase from us.” The Homestay Owners Association (HOA) was also launched to accommodate visitors especially during the famous Kaliguan Festival held every Jan. 24.
Beach dancing, Pinoy games and a beauty pageant highlight the festival, which has already been part of the Department of Tourism’s calendar of events. San Miguel Beer (SMB) brings in live bands from Cebu and Davao.
Marine, palay, agsamcrafts
“Apart from our 150-hectare marine sanctuary, our marine-coastal potential spots give us the resources needed for trade and commerce. The solid waste management program needs focus in our municipality now,” Alameda admitted. He also shared about the “Untold Islands” and the Panlangagan, Boslon and Isla Verde islands where tourists can go nature tripping.
Irizari said they are going to have a tie-up with the Chamber of Commerce. “We are one of the biggest palay producers in the province. We also have the Lanuza Marine Park and Sanctuary as well as the Lanuza Agsamcraft Cooperative that provides livelihood for women and children.
Agsamcrafts refer to bracelets, bags and other native accessories made of agsam, a vine that grows in the mountains. Further projects Pimentel said the delivery of health services through the Botica sa Barangay program is his administration’s second priority next to repairing farm-to-market roads.
An 800-kilometer road has been constructed already and the project will continue, he added. “We are largely promoting the mining industry of the province. We have an Australian who has invested and started explorations on nickel mining in Ablay. After five years, they are putting up a plant,” Pimentel said. Cantilan’s Guardo said her municipality will build a new drainage system after its dengue problem has lessened and farm-to-market roads completed.
“We already did the mini-park in two months. We will also improve our hydroelectric source in Sipangpang Falls by tying up with the Development Bank of the Philippines. We plan to borrow P40 million from DBP to complete such a project,” the mayor revealed. In Cantilan, Bayantel Communication services are already offered. Currently, Tandag Electric Co. (Telco) has 150 house subscribers. Asian Spirit flies to Tandag every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8:30 am. For tickets and reservations, one may call 341-3551, 341-2553 or 341-2555. (Rudynah D. Krua Thai offers catering, delivery services, introduces new menus
Catering, delivery, take out and fax menu are the new services that Krua Thai has in store for its loyal diners.
Manager Anthony Ballreich specified though that its free delivery service is offered during lunchtime only within the Ayala Business Park area, Banilad, and Mandaue and Lapu-lapu cities for a minimum order of P500. “In our catering service, we accommodate family gatherings, private parties, business or social events. Of course, you can have a choice of dishes through our hassle-free catering menu. Your event’s success is really what can make us feel satisfied and ultimately fulfilled in doing business!” said Ballreich.
Assistant manager Cedric Tumulak III added, “We have prepared party packages that are very friendly yet worth-availing. Name the occasion and we will make you the perfect host of the party.”
New menus
Almost 30 new authentic Thai menus are offered at Krua Thai. These include Karathong thong (Thai wanton balls), Gaeng Garee Gai (chicken in Thai yellow curry soup), Tod Mun Pla (Thai fish cake with sweet sauce, Phad Kee Mao (Thai spaghetti), See Krong Mao Priew Wam (fried spareribs in spicy sweet and sour sauce), among others. “More dishes are coming out soon,” announced Ballreich.
The pioneer authentic Thai restaurant in the city, Krua Thai is supervised by two Thai chefs. Pongsak Hiranpruck operates the restaurant along with wife Carol and sons Jim and Anthony. Chilis, dried herbs and spices like lemon grass, kaffir lime leaves, basil leaves, galangal and coriander leaves are what make its food authentic, the management said.
Secret to success
Krua Thai now has two branches in Cebu: at Unit K of Crossroads Mall in Banilad and at Unit 1 of Marina Mall in Lapu-Lapu city. Big boss Hiranpruck, who quarterly visits Cebu to ensure the smooth operation of the restaurants, said 90% of its raw materials and variety of seasonings is authentic as these are regularly shipped from Bangkok. “We will always keep authentic Thai food running. Maybe there are Thai restaurants coming, but we will remain as authentic as we can be,” he assured. With a 10-year experience in operating a Thai restaurant in Chiang Mai, Thailand, Hiranpruck certainly has the tongue to authenticate every dish Krua serves. To him, aside from the food’s authenticity, the ambiance (which is entirely Thai-inspired, from wood to silverware handcrafted by local artisans signifying Thailand’s cultural heritage) is another secret to the bistro’s success. For deliveries and inquiries on catering services, one may call 233-9398 (Crossroads branch) or 495-4818 (Mactan branch). (Rudynah D. Entera, PR-features writer)

Y101 FM, Globe Telecom sponsor ‘Mulatto sa Cebu’
After a long day of roving the streets for the street dancing and float parade in the grand Sinulog mardi gras last Jan. 19, Cebuanos and tourists alike partied all night at the “Mulatto sa Cebu” Sinulog show held at the Jukebox parking lot.
Y101 FM and Globe Telecom, in cooperation with San Miguel Beer and Vortex Caltex, presented the show featuring Manila’s famous retro band, Mulatto. The music of Cebu’s famous bands like Suburbia, Centerfold and Stagecrew also inspired the dancing crowd.
Mulatto’s retro music and impressive versions of songs like Rhythm of the Night and I’m Leaving on a Jet Plane amazed the partygoers. Sitting or standing, everyone sang along with the band’s four vocalists. All four of them really have great voices! They’re very good. Most of my friends are overwhelmed. And as I could see, everyone in the party scene shares the same impression on Mulatto. They should come here more often for live performances,” said Bonbon Montero of Globe-Cebu. Raymond “Jiggy” Cerna, one of the disc jockeys of Y101, hosted the event. Also attending the party were Y101 president Luis Tuason Luque, Councilor Jack Jakosalem and Jukebox owner Lord Yu. Ocean Jet, Blueprint set ‘Tribalfest 2003’ at CPH
Shipping company Ocean Jet and events group Blueprint have tied up for the holding of “Tribal Fest 2003” on Jan. 17 to 19 at the Cebu Plaza Hotel (CPH).
Event organizer Era Gimarino said it is their fourth time to do the annual festival. Forty local bands will perform in the event, including guest bands Greyhoundz and Slapshock, who performed for MTV Asia Awards lately.
“This is like a woodstuck thing! It’s bigger than ever—three days of live music and bringing people together in one venue for three consecutive days. There’s a band concert every night at the Plaza Club Circle, a thong competition at the pool area and a boom cars exhibition on Saturday night,” she said.

Ocean Jet marketing manager Erwin Biaño said, “We are honored and excited about supporting this grand concert-cum-festivity.” It is the first time for Ocean Jet to be the event’s major sponsor.

The first fusion-conceptualized “Tribal Fest” happened in the year 2000 at the Ayala Center Cebu parking lot. “Tribal Fest 2001” took place at the same venue. Last year’s event was celebrated at the Cebu Civic and Trade Center in Lahug.

Gimarino added that the party is in celebration of Cebu’s grandest and famous Sinulog festival. “A variety of music is certainly going to move the crowd. From 8 p.m. till sunrise, let’s party on!” she invited. (Rudynah D. Entera)

Sex Bomb Girls live in Mandaue, Feb. 1-2
By Rudynah D. Entera, PR-features writer

GMA 7-Eat Bulaga’s Sex Bomb Girls will come to Cebu for their first major concert at 8 p.m. on Feb. 1 and 7 p.m. on Feb. 2 at the Mandaue gymnasium.

With guests Ruby Rodriguez and Allan K., the concert dubbed “Yo! My Sex Bomb: the Concert” is a spectacle of dance, music and comedy which will feature the much-awaited “Bakit Papa?” audience participation segment.

It is presented by Petron Rev-X and sponsored by Gilbey’s Island Punch, BMG Records Pilipinas, Crimson Clothing Co., Speed Detergent Bar, Kolin Home Appliances, Lourdes Food Products & Catering Services, Rogelio Transport, Leonardo Bags and Sun.Star Cebu.

This is the group’s first major concert outside Metro Manila. Tickets are available at all SM Ticketnet outlets. For reservations, interested parties may call Gigi at 0920-2156439.

From boobtube to silverscreen
The group (named after Tom Jones’ song, Sex Bomb) started out as dancers in Eat Bulaga’s game segment, Laban o Bawi.

The girls’ grace, poise and looks have given them opportunities to perform regular dance numbers for Eat Bulaga, live performances in Metro Manila and all over the country, where reception has been very positive and alive. Everyday they appear on national television.

GMA 7’s talent queen, Mother Lily, has recognized how the girls appeal to a lot of viewers. She later cast the six of them (Rochelle, Jopay, Izzy, Weng, Yvette and Monic) in a movie titled “Bakit Papa?” with Wendell Ramos, Allan K, Chynna Ortaleza and Richard Gutierrez.

The girls admitted (in a presscon in Manila) that it was Eat Bulaga which thrust them into national prominence. Daily exposures have made them familiar household figures.

Controversies such as being “too daring” on television had become an intriguing issue, however, it never affected their appeal to the viewing public, as it created even more awareness.

Wholesome in reality
Because of their sexy numbers, some politicians have criticized them as bad precedent for the youth.

The girls admitted that they are sexy yet not “malaswa,” adding that they are wholesome in person.
Talented girls
Not only do they dance well, they also have the guts and potentials to be singers. They already have an album with BMG Records titled “Unang Putok” which topped the charts for several weeks and eventually turned multi-platinum. They also launched their Christmas album at Hard Rock Café last year.
Every Saturday at Eat Bulaga, the girls dish out Broadway tunes, 80’s hits and other songs. (Rudynah D. Entera)
